The jewelry system most professional piercers reach for today is younger than a lot of the people wearing it. Threadless body jewelry — the simple press-fit design where a decorative end just slides into a hollow post — was patented in 1997.
What makes the story interesting isn't just how the jewelry works. It's why it exists at all. Threadless wasn't invented as some comfort breakthrough. It started because a machine shop ran into a wall trying to cut screw threads small enough for the pieces piercers were asking for. The comfort turned out to be a very welcome side effect.

Before Threadless: Everything Screwed Together
For most of modern piercing history, body jewelry only attached one way — with threads. A tiny screw thread on one piece mated with a matching hole on the other. That came in two forms:
- Externally threaded: the threads sit on the post itself, which means the threaded section travels through the piercing every time the jewelry goes in.
- Internally threaded: the reverse. The post is hollow and smooth, and the threads live on the decorative end, so no threaded section passes through the tissue.

The Problem That Actually Caused the Invention
Through the 1990s, piercing was shifting away from the heavier gauges of the earlier scene toward smaller, more delicate work. We trace where that earlier scene came from in piercings in the 1970s.
Piercers started asking manufacturers for barbells in 16 gauge and smaller. That's exactly where the engineering started to fall apart.
Cutting a usable internal thread means drilling a hole and then tapping threads inside it — inside a post that might only be a millimeter or so across. The thinner the post, the thinner the remaining wall, and the more fragile and failure-prone the joint becomes. At the sizes piercers now wanted, internally threaded parts were hard to machine reliably and expensive when they failed inspection.
The solution wasn't a better thread. It was getting rid of the thread completely.
Who Actually Invented It
The answer runs through a California precision machine shop called Norsco Attachments, founded in 1983. Norsco had spent decades making precision screw-machined parts, including medical and dental components — the kind of work that demands tight tolerances on tiny metal pieces. That background turned out to be exactly right.
In the early 1990s, Norsco was manufacturing body jewelry for Gauntlet, the studio Jim Ward opened in 1975 and widely recognized as the first body piercing studio in the United States. Gauntlet was the leading body jewelry supplier of the era, and as demand outgrew its own capacity it started contracting manufacturing out.
When Gauntlet closed in the late 1990s, Norsco was left sitting on a substantial amount of body jewelry and no one to sell it to. That leftover inventory is why NeoMetal Inc was founded in 1997 by Ted and Sue — one handling manufacturing, the other handling sales. By the company's own account, Sue started by working out of a closet and cold-calling Bay Area piercing studios with essentially no industry background.
It was Ted who tackled the small-gauge problem. Instead of trying to cut threads into ever-smaller parts, he designed a joint that held by tension: a slightly bent pin on the decorative end that press-fits into a hollow post. The design was patented in 1997 and introduced to the US piercing market in 1998.
How the Mechanism Works
A threadless piece has two parts. The decorative end carries a thin pin. The post or barbell is hollow at the top. You slide the pin into the hollow post, and friction from a deliberate bend in the pin locks the two together.
That bend is the entire design. NeoMetal's own instructions say to insert the pin roughly a third of the way and bend it about 10 to 20 degrees. Bend it more and the fit gets tighter; bend it less and it comes apart more easily. That adjustability is deliberate — the piercer can tune the tension to the individual wearer.

Why It Took Over
Threadless spread quickly for reasons that had almost nothing to do with the original manufacturing headache.
- Nothing screws through the piercing. The post is smooth its whole length, so insertion is a straight slide instead of a rotation.
- Tiny ends stop being fiddly. Trying to thread a 2mm gem onto a post by hand is genuinely annoying. Pressing it in is not.

The Honest Limitations
Threadless isn't strictly better than threaded, and good piercers stock both.
A threadless end held only by friction can work loose if it catches on clothing, a towel, or hair — the same snag risk any protruding jewelry has, just with a joint that gives rather than unscrews. Check the ends every so often, especially after sleep and showers. If something feels loose, the pin bend usually needs a tweak, and that's a job for a piercer rather than a pair of pliers at home.
Interchangeability also has limits. Ends and posts from different manufacturers aren't reliably compatible because pin diameters and post bores vary. Mixing brands can create a joint that feels fine until it isn't.
What's Documented, and What Isn't
It's worth being straightforward about the sources here, because a lot of articles on this topic repeat the same sentence without saying where it actually comes from.
The 1997 patent date, the 1998 US market introduction, and the story of Ted and Sue founding the company all come from NeoMetal's own published company history. Those details are consistent across the company's materials and are widely accepted in the piercing industry, including by studios that have no commercial connection to NeoMetal.
What isn't publicly documented is a patent number, and NeoMetal's history only gives the founders' first names. So the claim is best described as well-established industry consensus that originates with the company itself — not something you can independently verify from public patent records. That distinction doesn't weaken the story, but it's the honest way to state it.
