"Implant grade" is one of the most over-used phrases in body jewelry. It gets printed on listings that have no business using it, and — here's the kicker — there's no internet police checking those claims. So how do you actually tell whether a piece is truly implant grade, or just cleverly marketed? The honest answer is that it comes down to a specific material standard and whether the seller can back it up. Here's what to look for, and what to ignore.

What "implant grade" actually means

Implant grade isn't a vibe or a self-proclaimed quality level — it's a material certified to a published standard, the same kind used for metals meant to stay inside the human body. The ones that matter for piercings:

  • ASTM F-136 — the implant-grade titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V ELI, also listed as UNS R56407). This is the gold standard for body jewelry.
  • ASTM F-67 — commercially pure titanium, also implant grade.
  • ASTM F-138 — implant-grade stainless steel (316LVM). Note this is significantly stricter than ordinary "316L surgical steel."

If a piece is truly implant grade, the seller can name the specific standard it meets. "Titanium" alone doesn't cut it — there are many titanium alloys, and only certain ones are certified for implants.

How to actually verify it

Don't just take a website's word for it. Here's the hierarchy of proof, in order of how much each one tells you:

  • The seller names the standard. A listing that says "implant-grade titanium, ASTM F-136" is making a specific, checkable claim. A listing that just says "implant grade" or "surgical grade" with no standard is telling you nothing.
  • The seller has documentation. Reputable suppliers can point to a material certification or mill certificate showing the metal meets the standard — and the best ones go further with third-party metallurgical testing. If you ask and they can't produce anything, that's your answer.
  • How it's threaded. Quality implant-grade pieces are internally threaded or threadless — no external threads dragging through the piercing.   • "Hypoallergenic" — a marketing word, not a standard. It doesn't tell you the alloy.
  • "Nickel-free" — meaningful only if backed by the actual material spec.
  • "Surgical grade" / "medical grade" — vague cousins of "implant grade" with no fixed definition.

Can you test it at home?

Not reliably. Don't waste time on kitchen-table chemistry — magnet tests, skin-reaction tests, or rubbing the piece on paper are folklore, not verification. Real verification happens before you buy, through the standard and the seller's documentation — not after, in your bathroom.

What to use for a healing piercing

For anything still healing, stick to implant-grade titanium (ASTM F-136), solid 14K or 18K gold, or niobium. These are the materials least likely to cause a reaction.
